Takuro Kotaka

Born in 1984, lives and works in Saitama Japan. While studying media design Kotaka visited Mentawai Villages in Indonesia. A few years later he visited Indonesia again and created the video work about the story of his love for one of Mentawai girls. Kotaka did many performances in Japan such as riding on the Yamanote train in Tokyo while wearing the costume of the Mentawai villagers, and also filmed the everyday life of people around him.

BABAISM is a piece that documents a dialogue between his grandmother Sumi and the artist. The piece starts with Sumi humming a Japanese pop song, Enka, which creates a festive and optimistic atmosphere. Even though the grandmother is reluctant to be filmed, she really enjoys talking and being listened to by her grandson. Her sweetness, and her strange narratives of ghosts and sickness, gives the work a compelling mix of humor and the bizarre, as well as demonstrating the strength of family feeling.
