Shintaro Miyake works in a wide variety of media from drawing and painting to installation. However performance plays an essential role in his projects. His performance, in which he appears in stuffed animal suits, shows a good sense of humor while his exposed legs or arms strangely create a touch of grotesqueness to the work. This may be the discomfort felt in the moment when the fantasy and reality overlaps. The performance of a fight between Minotauro that the artist performs and the giant octopus has been presented oversees, including Rome, Salzburg and Miami where it was well received.
Miyake was born in 1970. He graduated from Tama Art University. His work has been featured in many exhibitions. The major solo exhibitions include “Maybe it’s a bright side of life” (2007, Takahashi Collection, Tokyo), “NI-MARU-ROKU, in DOITSU” (2006, c/o Atle Gerhardsen, Berlin), “Beaver No Seikatsu” (2006, Sandra and David Bakalar Gallery, Boston), and “Atsumori” (2005, Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo).
